Doctor Who vs. Santa isn’t the only geeky Christmas special we’re looking forward to this year. Charlie Brooker’s eerily prescient dystopian series Black Mirror—which just became available on Netflix—returns for the holidays, with bonus creepy Jon Hamm!
Black Mirror: White Christmas (hee) interweaves three stories of “Yuletide techno-paranoia” starring Hamm, Prometheus‘ Rafe Spall, and Game of Thrones‘ Oona Chaplin. Here’s the official synopsis:
In a mysterious and remote snowy outpost, Matt (Jon Hamm) and Potter (Rafe Spall), share a Christmas meal together and swap creepy tales of their earlier lives in the outside world.
Matt is a charismatic American trying to bring the reserved, secretive Potter out of his shell. Are both men who they appear to be? Along the way we see Jon Hamm offering an unusual form of romantic guidance to an inexperienced young man, watch Oona Chaplin thrust headlong into a nightmarish world of ‘smart’ gadgetry, and explore what might happen if you could ‘block’ people in real life, just as you can on Facebook or Twitter.
You definitely get a taste of Hamm’s sinister puppet master in the trailer, as well as the successes and horrors of the “smart” technology, especially as concerns people’s romantic lives. Because that’s what Christmas is all about, right? Love… and gross abuse of technology leading to dehumanization.
Black Mirror: White Christmas airs December 16 on Channel 4 in the UK; no word on when it will make it to U.S. airwaves.
